A new exhibit is coming to the Story Garden this year! In honor of fallen Johnson City police officer DW Smith, who was killed in the line of duty on March 2014, the police car exhibit will display Officer Smith’s patrol car #712, which will be accessible for children to explore.
On Wednesday, March 11, 2020 the wall of our future police station and garage was raised at the BOCES Education Center. The Discovery Center is honored to be spearheading this project to bring Officer DW Smith Jr’s police car to our Story Garden. It will provide children with countless opportunities to foster learning through interactive play while promoting the concept that police officers are essential community helpers and friends.
We are very thankful for:
- The Broome-Tioga BOCES students who are designing a garage to house the police car as well as a miniature police station playhouse.
- The SUNY Morrisville students who are preparing the car by removing the engine and making sure the interior is safe for kids to play in.
- The Johnson City Police Department who decided to donate the car instead of sending it to auction last year.
