The Discovery Center is thrilled to announce the grand opening of Phase One of the Pirate Ship Playground, a significant expansion of the Story Garden. This exciting project provides a much-needed outdoor play space for the center’s preschool students and the community.
Construction of the Pirate Ship Playground began on October 8, 2024 with the first of three phases that includes installation of the pirate ship. When all three phases are complete, this exciting new play area will feature a towering pirate ship with slides and ladders, a treasure chest filled with surprises, an accessible buoy for all children, Peter Pan’s iconic house, a bridge for exploring, and covered benches for a rest.
The official ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening of phase one took place on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
The Pirate Ship Playground is more than just a recreational space; it serves as an essential resource for The Discovery Center’s preschool programs. Previously, students had to walk a considerable distance to reach an outdated community playground. With the demolition of this playground imminent, the Pirate Ship Playground ensures that the preschoolers have access to a safe and engaging outdoor environment right on the center’s premises.
This project has been made possible thanks to the generous support of The Decker Foundation Grant, City of Binghamton HUD Entitlement Grant, Spark Good Local Grant from Walmart, Donna Stack Memorial Fund, The Discovery Center Foundation, Klee Foundation, City of Binghamton Parks and Recreation, BAE Systems Community Impact Grant, Broome County Small Community Fund, and The Discovery Center’s designated donations for the Story Garden.
