Mission
The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier Foundation, Inc. is committed to ensuring the long-term financial stability of The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier, a hands-on children’s museum in Binghamton, NY. We will position it for the future so our children, grandchildren and their grandchildren will discover for themselves the joy of learning.
History
Founded in 1978, The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier began as the region’s first hands-on children’s museum. After quickly outgrowing its original location, it moved in 1987 to Binghamton’s historic Ross Park, home to the Ross Park Zoo.
In 2008, the Museum expanded outdoors with the award-winning Story Garden—an imaginative space featuring 15 themed exhibits, sculptures, and vibrant gardens, all created with local artists and volunteers. Both the Children’s Museum and Story Garden are filled with hand-painted, interactive exhibits, offering immersive, educational experiences rooted in local history, culture, and creativity.
Founded in 2006, The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier Foundation ensures that exhibits and programs for children and families will continue for generations to come.
