DISCOVERY KID'S SUMMER CAMPS 2010 Science, Art History, Drama and Interactive Outdoor Play!
Camper Age Groups: 5-6 (5 year olds must be registered for Kindergarten for Fall 2010), 7-8 and 9-10. Artist-in-residency camps available for 11-14 year olds. Internship program for 13-15 year olds! Toy Story Mornings
Those wonderful Disney characters Buzz and Woody come to life with an exploration of everything Toys! Learn the story of famous American toy makers and make your own action figure! Just like Woody and his toy friends, every day will be a new adventure full of surprises as you make your own board game, silly putty, paper air planes that really soar and so much more!
Tall Tales Afternoons
Tall Tales began in the 1800’s as a way for pioneers to understand the greatness of the American West. Join in the fun this week where the stories are bigger than life as we go on adventures and learn about huge forests, mountains, ferocious animals, deserts and the people who tamed them! Some of the heroes we will learn about were real people like Davy Crocket and Johnny Appleseed while others like Paul Bunyan were not, but all of them have a Tall Tale to tell! Stories will come to life through games and crafts!
Ages 7-8
Disney Animation Mornings
Try your hand at the animation process. Learn about Walt Disney and how he turned creativity and innovation into the movies we love today! Plan and design your own storyboard. Create a character and learn about how technology makes pictures and movement come together! Study the drawing of poses and movement and learn the basics of animation with “key frames” and story lines. You will be amazed when your images run right off the page in your very own kineograph (flip book)!
You’ve Got Spirit: Cheerleading Afternoons
Cheerleading isn’t just for the boys! Did you know that cheerleading was actually invented by a guy not a girl?! The history of cheerleading originates from the United States in 1884 when a crowd of fans at Princeton University came up with a chant to encourage their team to succeed! A few years later a team in Minnesota came up with their own chant, but in November of 1898 the Minnesota football team was having such a time of it that Johnny Campbell stood up and directed the very first cheer! And the sport was born! So boys and girls stand up and join in the fun with kicks, jumps, shouts and dancing to cheer your fellow campers on as you lead the Friday pep rally for friends and family!
Boys Will Be Boys Afternoons
Put down those hand held video games and try your hand at fun the all American kid way. Make a sling shot, learn the art of archery with a bow and arrow made by you and conquer the arm wrestling circuit! You won’t be bored in this camp packed with activities based on Hal Iggulden’s popular book Dangerous Book for Boys!

You’re The Next Contestant On…! Mornings
Game shows have been a part of American culture for more than 70 years, even before there was television! The quiz shows like Take it or Leave it and Truth or Consequences first came over the radio with people young and old pressing their ear up to the speaker back in the 1930’s and 40’s! Step up to the podium and be the next contestant on game shows old and new! Test your trivia and your luck as you learn some popular American history through games and win some big time fun!
American POP ART - Afternoons
American Pop Art with its roots in the 1950’s spread from New York to the West Coast with exhibitions and performances by a number of important artists whose work was expressed through strong design and bold color and reflected the popular attitudes of the time. Investigate the motivations of the pop art movement and put into practice the methods and media of such great artists as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
Session #2 - July 12-16: Myths and Legends Week
Ages 5-6
Animal Tales Mornings
Explore animal myths and legends from around the world! How did the Kangaroo get his pouch? How did bear loose his tail? Why is Opossum’s tail so bare? And for goodness sake how did the swan’s neck get to be so long? The answer to all these questions can be answered through myths and legends passed down through out the ages! Learn about animals and their environments and hear some amazing stories that will have you saying “I can’t wait to share that story with family and friends.” And so it goes…
Fairy Tales Feasting Afternoons
We know from reading “Goldie Locks and The Three Bears” that the bears like to start their day off with a nutritious hot breakfast of porridge. What other fairy tale characters have favorite treats to eat? Find out as we explore the world of fairy tales and food. Each day we will read a new fairy tale from around the world. Some of them you may have heard before and some you may not have, and then we will investigate the yummy foods they like to eat! Crafts, games and cooking will be on the menu all week!
Ages 7-8
Cryptozoology Mornings
Cryptozoology is the study of animals that might be real, such as the Loch Ness Monster, and other animals that have been proven to be true, such as dinosaurs. This week you will be a cryptozoologist and study mythical creatures and beasts. Are they real? Hoaxes? Or just figments of our imagination? Read accounts of sightings and stories passed on through time then create your own mythical animal and tell the tale. The tale becomes legend, the legend becomes history.
The Legend of Atlantis: The Lost Empire Afternoons
A description of catastrophe written by the famous Greek philosopher Plato in 4th century A.D. and passed down from generation to generation tells the legend of the sinking of an island metropolis, Atlantis. The island said to be a paradise inhabited by the Atlantean people until disaster struck! According to Plato “ Through violent earthquakes and floods, in a single day and night of misfortune the island was swallowed up by the Earth and…disappeared into the depths of the sea.” During this week of investigation “Atlantean” campers will create the paradise of their dreams and investigate the scientific possibilities of Atlantis’s disappearance.
DC Reality Mornings
Be a part of Discovery Reality News team as we video reality television right here at Discovery Kids Summer Camp! Learn the history of television. Get hands-on experience using a video camera, edit material and create your own narrations! It is going to be a week of tremendous fun-REALLY!

Mythic Creatures: Truth or Fiction? Afternoons
For thousands of years the creatures of the unknown have fascinated mankind. You are about to delve into the world of fire breathing dragons, vampires, werewolves, mermaids and unicorns! Discover how their powers have captured our imagination! Examine the legends, science and history behind some of the most fascinating creatures to ever have walked the earth…or did they?
Dramatic Arts For Ages 11-14
The Play Is The Thing! Mornings and Afternoons
The play is the thing as you create a scene with all the imagination, fun, costumes, and scripts created by you! Join professional actor, Heidi Weeks, for a week of theater games, writing scripts and performing! Everyone can be an actor on center stage at the Discovery Center Theater! Play Is The Thing is an all day of fun program. All actors will need a bag lunch.
Session #3 - July 19-23: Environmental Avengers Week

The Lorax! Mornings
The environment is at risk and it is up to you to help the Lorax save the trees from the greedy Once-lers! Young environmental avengers learn about the challenges that face our environment through stories, experiments and crafts as they create a world where the Bar-ba-Loots are able to frolic again eating fruits from the trees and Swomee Swans fly and sing through blue skies!
Art Walk Afternoons
The grass really is greener at The Discovery Center! Come check it out as we combine two of our favorite things to do here at Ross Park- hiking in the park and creating art! You will want to wear comfortable shoes for this week of hiking, playing games and creating art using natural and recycled items!

Green Is the New Black! Mornings
Create clothing and accessories that are real keepers from some oldies, but goodies! Shirts, hats, shorts and more are given new life through creativity! Using recycled items create a whole new look! Shirt too small? No problem! It will make a great tote bag! Keeping clothing in the closet and not the landfill is not only good for the planet it is down right fashionable! Learn how shoe companies are using recycled materials in their products to reduce their carbon footprint! And what you can do to keep our planet Green!
Mammal Mania Mornings
Mammals live on land, at sea, in the air and even under ground! Mammals will be the focus of this week as we investigate mammals that live right here in our back yard and others that are in jeopardy of extinction! Learn about habitats, behaviors, diet and threats that impact mammals all over the world!
The Garden Plate Special Afternoons
Travel the world without ever leaving the garden! Learn about common vegetables that are grown here in the United States and abroad and how different cultures prepare them for the table. Cook up delicious ethnic foods and learn about organic gardening with an investigation on green composting (with worms!), which bugs are our friends and which are just pests! Get to the root of hydroponic gardening and be prepared to get wet!

Ages 9-10
Re-create Mornings
Recycle, re-think, re-create! Recycled materials are given new life as we turn trash into treasures! Environmental artist, Andy Goldsworthy’s natural sculptures will be studied for inspiration as campers create sculptures made from rocks, flowers, twigs and thorns. Photography will be used to document due to the ephemeral nature of these creations. Homemade paper and sculptures made from recycled items will have you thinking globally smart and creating a better environment through art!
It’s Not Cool Afternoons
The Earth has warmed by about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the past 100 years and that’s not cool! But why? And How? Scientists aren’t exactly sure. Is the Earth getting warmer on its own? Or are the things people are doing helping to make this happen? Put on your lab coat and join in the scientific quest to understand the factors involved in global warming. Investigate the green house effect and explore a variety of hands-on experiments that will investigate what is making green thinkers a bit hot under the collar!

No Batteries Required! Mornings
Fun, plain and simple, that is what this week will be all about as kids explore what children did for fun before electronics. Games that stretch the imagination and put children on the go with active play will be balanced with some old fashioned arts and crafts.
Dinosaurs Afternoons
Do you dig dinosaurs? Then this is the camp for you! Young paleontologists will travel back in time to the age of the dinosaurs to unearth the mysteries of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods! Make your own fossils, learn what dinosaurs looked like and ate as you travel back in time to the land of the lost!
Ages 7-8
Relics: Pottery Mornings
Pottery is one of the oldest and most enduring materials known to humankind. Primitive people the world over have fashioned pots and bowls for daily and spiritual use. The earliest methods for making bowls and jugs is hand building - using only hands and clay. Investigate hand building techniques used by different cultures over time. Learn how ancient Egyptians worked clay to make vessels for everyday and spiritual use, Create a pinch pot in the style of the Native Americans out west and study the use of figurative clay works from across the globe. Your week is sure to shape up to be one that will break the mold!

Sherlock Holmes, a fictional character of the late 19th early 20th century was the creation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a Scottish author and physician. Doyle wrote 56 short stories featuring London based detective Sherlock Holmes. It will be your job to create the 57th Sherlock Holmes short story full of mystery and intrigue. Through a variety of mysterious adventures and deductive measures taken by you and your detective friends, the truth will come out and the mystery will be solved! All the while learning about the society and history in Victorian England!

The Land Down Under Mornings
Take an adventure below the equator as we explore Australia, the land down under! Explore the outback where it doesn’t rain much, but sheep rule! Then take a dive into the most dangerous waters on the planet to investigate The Great Barrier Reef where the largest deposit of coral exists! Learn about the most famous Australian animals the kookaburra, the platypus and the emu, but we won’t want to forget the marsupials! The what? Join us in the land down under to find out!
Adirondack Camping Afternoons
Often it is said, “The Adirondacks are right in our back yard”. Well, this week we are going to pretend that is so. Young campers will experience the Adirondack experience right here in The Discovery Center’s backyard. Walking the trail through the Ross Park grounds into the mountain with backpacks made by the children themselves! Campers will experience hiking, animal encounters, bug collecting, building a campfire and campfire cooking! Kids will even construct their own lean-to! The history and life of the Adirondacks will all be experienced through stories and crafts!

Amazing Amazon Mornings
Do you know where chocolate comes from? Take a journey through the Ecuadorian Amazon to learn about the delicate balance of the Amazon that provides us with some of our most favorite things. Learn about the dangers that face the world’s rainforests and what we can do to do our part! Study the animals that live in the Amazon and learn about the people who call the rainforest home. Science and art come together for an amazing Amazon Ed-venture you won’t want to miss!
The DC Mystery Machine Morning
Join Scooby and his friends Shaggy, Fred, Thelma and Daphne on a friendly ghost hunt! Investigate the mysterious happenings at the museum as you dust for fingerprints, read the secret messages and collect the clues! Scooby snacks will be served daily!
Stories of the Night Sky! Afternoon
Myths about the sky, stars and constellations! Combine history and science as you gaze at the night sky using Skylab portable planetarium! For thousands of years people from across the globe have been looking up at the same night sky and associating things from earth with the pictures they see in heaven. Learn about Native American, Greek and other cultures through their stories in the sky.

The plot will thicken as physical and mental challenges are tasked, putting true team building skills to test as you collect the ancient artifacts and solve the mystery at the museum!

Astronaut Training Camp Mornings
An environment with almost no gravity creates challenges for even the simplest of life’s necessities! How do astronauts sleep? What do they eat and the question on everyone’s mind…how on earth do they go to the bathroom?! Learn the challenges physically and emotionally that face space explorers and the dangers they face as they travel past the stars! Learn the constellations and about out of this world scientific exploration using the StarLab portable planetarium!

The Red Planet! Afternoons
Mars today is a world of cold and lonely deserts, apparently without life of any kind…or is it? There is evidence of a warmer and wetter past. Features resembling dry riverbeds and minerals that form in the presence of water indicate water once flowed through Martian sands. Learn about minerals and gasses as you investigate the planets in our solar system and create a world where Martians roam!

Dr. Seuss is Loose! Morning
Enter the world of imaginative characters, rhyme and meter for a colorful week of arts, foods, and story telling complete with dramatic games all celebrating the works of Theodor Seuss Geisel-Dr. Seuss! It is sure to be fun for all as we play sneechball!
Royal Court Afternoon
Have a royal good time in the kingdom of fun as you explore real life royalty. How did they live? What did they wear? Costumes, crafts and food will have you feeling like real princes and princesses during this week of regal fun!

Rube Goldberg Morning
Reuben Goldberg was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer and inventor. He is best known for a series of cartoons he created depicting complex devices that perform simple tasks in fun and crazy ways! Join in the Rube Goldberg contest and design and create an amazing Rube Goldberg machine complete with all the bells and whistles!
Royal Court Morning
Have a royal good time in the kingdom of fun as you explore real life royalty. Create a royal crest and show your true colors at a jousting tournament! Fun will be on the highest order as we investigate the daily life of royalty and the life in King Arthur’s Court.
Down In the Bayou! Afternoon
Cajun encounters will be at every turn with an investigation of Honey Island Swamp, learn about Jean Lafitte the pirate and the sights and sounds of New Orleans. Jazz music and Cajun cuisine will be sure to spice up your summer!
Sports Hall of Fame Afternoons
You have just been inducted into The Discovery Kids Sports Hall of Fame! Learn about famous Hall of Fame athletes. Hear their success stories and make some history of your own as you try out your skills playing flag football, basketball, wiffle ball and a variety of traditional and not so traditional sports!

Dance Legends Mornings
Learn the fancy footwork of your favorite dance legends from different movies, music videos and musicals. From Gene Kelly in “Singing In The Rain” to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” you will dancing like a pro! The week will conclude with a movie montage performance of legendary proportion!
Collage: The Art of Romare Bearden Afternoons
His friends called him Romie. Like many African-American families living in the south, Romie’s family settled in the Harlem section of New York City about 1914. He graduated from NYU and became a social worker. For a long time he only worked on his art in his free time. He made art using many different materials, but became most famous for his collages. Now his works of art are in prestigious collections like the National Gallery of Art. Snippets from magazines, photographs, painted papers and art reproductions were among Romie’s materials he called his “paints”. Romie’s art often uses famous images using artistic license to tell a different life story. Tell your story this week… Romie-style!

Yo hablo espanol? This camp will have you traveling to Spain as we investigate the country, the language and the foods that make Spain magnifico!

DC News Mornings
We are broadcasting to you today from The Discovery Center where the sun is always shining and history is made every day! Star in our newscast as we learn how to write and create news, sports and weather stories. Interview campers, film and do live reports!
Let The Games Begin! Afternoons
Kids spirits unite under the Olympic rings with an investigation of good sportsmanship and friendly competition! Investigate the Olympic’s early beginnings at Mount Olympus and see how the games have changed over time! The torch is lit for fun, games and crafts that will take you on an adventure where sports and culture collide!

Discovery Interns
For 13-15 year olds!
Explore the arts, science, history and drama and outdoor fun with an inside look at the workings of a children’s museum. Aid with summer camps, try your hand at fun filled activities and meet new friends!
Please call for more information. Application and references required. As part of the learning process interested applicants will be asked to interview. Selected applicants will be asked to attend a pre-camp training session.
