The Human Body
The Sensational 5 Senses
For Grades K-2
Hop on the brain train as we explore how each of our five senses make sense of the world around us. Students will explore their bodies with interactive experiments and activity stations dedicated to one sense. While moving from station to station, they will complete a “You’re Sensational” booklet to help them see how our senses help our body work. Sciences
Fabulous Fossils
For grades K-3
What is a fossil and where do they come from? Become paleontologists and “dig” for clues to help us answer these questions and many more. Students will be able to handle replica dinosaur fossils such as a velociraptor claw, a T-rex tooth among others while using their observation and prediction skills to determine what each fossil actually is. BEL: Compare your heights with that of well known dinosaurs. NYS Standards: MST 1,4,6; ELA 1,3,4
Weird & Wacky Weather
Become meteorologists for the day as we explore the ups and downs of our changing weather patterns. Students will explore the water cycle and cold and warm air fronts to see how they affect the weather. The forecast is definitely for fun and learning no matter what the weather is outside! BEL: Explore the tools that meteorologists use. NYS Standards: MST 1,4; ELA 1,2,4; ARTS 1
H20 Bubbles & Beyond
Explore the many uses of water and density with our wet and wacky activity stations. Add a little soap for some bubble fun as we learn about the many unique qualities bubbles have. Get ready to dive in as there is sure to be something that will float your boat or burst your bubble! Great as an outdoor adventure! BEL: Learn about the properties of water. Susquehanna Waterworks
For Grades 2-4
Does anyone know where our very own Susquehanna River begins and ends? Using our own river as an example watershed, students will learn about the different bodies of water there are and what can be found in them and their use in our ecosystem through various hands-on activities and experiments. They will also learn the importance of water conservation and protection by seeing the damage water pollution can have on our everyday lives. BEL: Meet some live sea creatures that make their home in the Susquehanna. NYS Standards: MST 1,2,4,5,7; HS 2
Acorns Away!
For Grades 1-3
Have you ever wondered what exactly is inside an acorn? Did you know that acorns not only grow trees and are food for animals, but they also are homes to animals as well? Students will use measuring, predicting and observation skills through the investigation of acorns, and will be introduced to habitats, communities, food chains and ecosystem dynamics that exist everywhere in our environment. Available September- November only. BEL: Make an acorns part sheet. NYS Standards: MST 1,3,4; ELA 1,4
“Whoo Whoo’s Living in the Tree?”
For grades 2-4
Explore the amazing eating habits of a bird of prey as we follow the food chain of an owl. Students will use measuring, predicting and observation skills through the study of owl habitats and their digestive systems as they are introduced to communities, food chains and ecosystem dynamics that exist everywhere in our environment. Unraveling the web of DNA
Grades 3 & 4
Put on your lab coat as we become scientists exploring the eorld of DNA and how it makes all living things so unique. Students will explore interesting traits that are- surprise- inherited from your parents. No amount of practicing could ever perfect them! Collect and compare clas data before we prepare for a DNA extraction of our own to see what DNA truly is. BEL: Explore the parts of a cell. NYS Standards: MST 1,3,4,5; ELA 1,4
Who Dunnit?
For grades 3 & 4
Become detectives as you help solve a mystery and learn the basics of forensic science. See how DNA and its properties play an important role in helping solve some mysteries as we conduct a DNA extraction of our own. Students will also use deductive reasoning, prediction, mapping skills and collaboration as we conduct experiments to help us crack the case! BEL: Explore what tools forensics use to solve cases. Pedal Power!
For grades 3 & 4
How does a bike actually work? What are all those gears and chains for? The answer is simple – simple machines that is! Through hands on demonstration and cooperative group activities students will learn about work, gravity, force, balance and how the six major types of simple machines help us bike our way through our everyday lives. 3…2…1…Blastoff!
For grades 3 & 4
Have you ever wondered how astronauts blast into space? Or how airplanes are able to lift off the ground? Or even how birds fly? Learn how all of these things are possible as we explore the properties of air and the basic laws of motion. Students will experiment with projectile motion, drag forces, gravity and propulsion as they check out new and old flying machines, as well as design one of their own. Of course no flying machine is complete without being tested, so get ready for take off! BEL: Tour old flying models. NYS Standards: MST 1,3,4; ELA 1,3,4
It Just Makes Sense
For grades K-4
Come for a full day of fun with programs at both the zoo and the DC! It Just Makes Sense explores the 5 senses with an animals spin: identify animal sounds with your sense of hearing, test your sense of touch as you identify various animal skins, look for camouflaged animals hiding in their habitats; taste different fruits from the rainforest and learn how animal mommies use their sense of smell to find their babies. Then, head to the zoo to put your sense to work with an up close visit with live animals. This program features a reduced rate and is offered during the months of September and October only.
Literacy
Once Upon a Time…
Have you ever wondered how your favorite book or story came to be? Step into the imagination of an author and illustrator as we practice our drawing skills with live animals as our subjects, all while learning the components of and what makes a good story. Students will complete the program by letting their creative juices flow as they write their own story based on their illustrations. BEL: Be part of the story with an interactive retelling where you are the star! NYS Standards: ARTS 1,2,4; ELA 1,2,4; MST 4
Math and Art
Kitchen Counting
What kinds of things are in your kitchen? Put your math skills to the test as we use all of these things to explore and practice pattern making, basic operations, weighing and measuring, following directions and much more! BEL: Explore how kitchen tools have changed throughout time. NYS Standards: MST 1,3,6,7; ELA 1,4
Go Van Gogh!
Students will explore self-portraiture and the artists who are famous for them through several hands on stations en-route to creating their very own self-portrait. They will study themselves in the mirror and learn how artists represent themselves and their emotions using color, shape, line, value and texture. BEL: Explore how colors evoke certain emotions. NYS Standards: ART 1-4; SS 2; ELA 1,4
Social Studies
Touch Local History Part 1 & 2
For grades 3-5
Travel back in time with us to early America as we learn about the people who founded the Southern Tier and how the area became settled. Using primary source documents and artifacts students will learn about early transportation, land acquisition, and the different livelihoods that enabled early settlers to survive here. In Part 2, we explore businesses that started here in the Binghamton area. Explore EJ shoe tools, put milk bottls in chronological order, and learn what the highest paying job was in Binghamton during the year 1870. Students will evaluate how each business treated their workers and decide where they would choose to work. BEL: Try out some of the survival and work tasks done at that time. NYS Standards: SS 1,3,4; ELA 1,3,4
